First Saturday Bird Walks
Since October of 2002 KAS has offered the monthly First Saturday Bird Walk in rain, wind, snow, and sunshine. One need not know anything about birds or nature. Trip leaders and participants will provide some guidance and help with bird ID. All you need is a pair of binoculars and garb for the weather, and kids are welcome. Walking on park paths (pavement to dirt) usually takes about three hours.
Each first Saturday of the month, please join us at 8:00 AM at the parking lot to Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park (Ellensburg), located on Umptanum Road where the bridge crosses the Yakima River. 509- 933-1179 for info or questions.
November 1 ~ First Saturday Birdwalk, Irene Rinehart Park. Leaves falling, trees disrobing. Juncos and kinglets are back. Bewick’s Wrens may be buzzing and dippers are moving downriver towards Ellensburg. Carefree walking with no traffic on the park road. Some river levee backtracking needed to detour around a bridge project.
Park off of Umptanum Rd at 8 AM for a 3+ hour walk. For info: Steve at fieldtrips@kittitasaudubon.org
December 6 ~ First Saturday Birdwalk, Irene Rinehart Park. Trees are bare, birds more visible, and the weather will be weather. Waterfowl expected in the pond so a viewing scope provided for closer looks. Riverside parking lot off of Umptanum Rd at 8 AM for a 3 hour walk.
December 20, 2025 ~ Ellensburg Christmas Bird Count! Team leaders will be contacting former team members for participant verification. If you have never counted in a prior year but would like to do so this year, please email Judy Hallisey at hydrojude@gmail.com.
New for this year, you can also sign up through National Audubon’s Mobilize website at: https://www.mobilize.us/audubon-community-science/event/862828
