First Saturday Bird Walks
Since October of 2002 KAS has offered the monthly First Saturday Bird Walk in rain, wind, snow, and sunshine. One need not know anything about birds or nature. Trip leaders and participants will provide some guidance and help with bird ID. All you need is a pair of binoculars and garb for the weather, and kids are welcome. Walking on park paths (pavement to dirt) usually takes about three hours.
May 28, Thursday ~ Suncadia Trails Birdwalk. Join Cle Elum folks on an exploration of their woodsy paths. A 3-mile walk will start at Nelson Dairy and loop through woods, riparian habitat and the riverbank. Thanks to John Crowley and Judy H for planning this special trip. June 6 ~ First Saturday Birdwalk, Irene Rinehart Park. THE big month to look for and find nesting songbirds in the cottonwoods. We can expect tanagers, orioles, flycatchers, warblers, vireos – and always something unexpected. Meet at 8 AM at Irene Rinehart riverside parking lot off Umptanum Road for a 3 hour walk. Thursday, June 11 ~ Umptanum Falls. Car birding and hike. We can spot birds along the high open steppe as far as Ellensburg Pass, then return to the Falls parking lot and cruise the open forest corridor along the creek. Bluebirds, hummingbirds, flycatchers, grosbeaks, tanagers, et. al. Meet at 8 AM at Super One, and return mid-afternoon. Bring a lunch and hiking essentials. July 4 ~ First Saturday Birdwalk, Celebrate summer on a holiday weekend with a walk in the park. Nesting birds watch the walkers from above, and hungry fledglings wait for their moment on the wing. Summer challenge: find the catbird! Meet at 8 AM at Irene Rinehart riverside parking lot off Umptanum Road for a 3 hour walk.
